26 hours in airports, double booked flights, 42-degree heat and 24,000 steps a day: It can only be the week of the Black Hat and DEFCON conference. I attended the largest information security conference to discuss the current trends and issues facing the industry. With more than 15,000 professionals in attendance from over 100 countries, the event promised to deliver an extraordinary experience.
Alex Stamos, chief information security officer (CISO) at Facebook, delivered the keynote opening speech. Even with the dazzling lights and spectacular laser show (pictured above), there was a serious message.
He said “There is a problem with the focus being on complex technical problems, not harm. The truth is the vast majority of harm comes from the simple problems that are difficult to solve, such as the rampant reuse of passwords.”
Alex drove the message home “To make people’s lives safer and more secure we need to focus on empathy and diversity”.
With a crammed schedule that played host to more than 10 different talks – all held simultaneously – it was difficult to decide which to attend. Most of the topics involved artificial intelligence, the internet of things and social engineering.
After waiting in line for 30 minutes and missing out on one of the packed-out talks, I went for the smarter and less stressful option of purchasing the presentations. This will allow myself and the TechPath team the opportunity to review in our own time and ensure all key information is examined.
There were over 300 different companies show casing their products and services. It was great to catch up with some of our existing partners including Microsoft, Webroot and Sophos. I took the opportunity to discuss the products they currently have in development, and how we will be able to leverage them to better protect our customers.
I was particularly interested in the vendors that I hadn’t seen before and their innovative solutions, especially around AI. I listened to their demos, took product brochures and made mention of which ones to review in more detail.
It was a whirlwind of a week to say the least. Now that I am back home, I am reviewing all the material to establish what is applicable for our customers, and how we can ensure that we are doing our part in protecting Australian businesses.
